Over the years Facebook has added a lot of resources for businesses and organizations to use to market their products and services. The Facebook page of a business can be a powerful tool to market to customers and provide validity that the business exists and is legitimate. In the past, businesses would use a personal Facebook page to market because they used their existing friend network they already had. Someone would start out by marketing their business on their personal profile and then eventually make that personal profile their business profile. Besides this being against Facebook’s policies, there are many reasons why you would want to convert that personal profile you are using for your business to a Facebook Business Page.

You get to bring your friends with you
Most people fear that switching to a Facebook Business Page means having to start over. This is not the case. Facebook makes it easy to convert your personal profile into a business page. I did this for my own personal Facebook profile a few years back when I was getting tired of managing a personal profile. I had over 4,200 Facebook friends on my profile because I accepted just about everybody who requested to be my friend. I didn’t want to lose those people, so I decided to convert to a page which turned my Facebook Friends into Facebook Likes.
You get business a more robust profile
Using a personal profile you do not have an easy way to list your Business Name, Address, Phone Number and Business Hours. A Facebook Business Page makes it easy for you to do this. This makes it easy for people to find relevant information about your business they may need. You can add products and services to your Facebook Business Page. This information looks really good on Mobile devices.
People can review your business
Customers can write reviews about their experiences with your business. While this sounds scary, it’s actually pretty awesome. You can encourage people to write reviews on Facebook which are shared with their friends which promotes you to potential customers. We all know that the most powerful referral is a word-of-mouth referral. This is about as close as it gets on Facebook.
You get insights into who’s liked your page

This may be the best reason right here: You can use Facebook’s ad platform to target ads to Facebook users, but you can only do this through a Facebook page. Spend money on Facebook? Yes!
Facebook has a ton of information about us and we can use that information to target specific ads to potential customers. Rather than send out 10,000 mailers hoping to hit 50 potential customers, you can target people who are specifically looking for your products or services. When I was photographing a lot of weddings I would use Facebook ads to target future Brides. How did I do that? It was easy! I created an ad that was only displayed to women within a 50-mile radius of my address who had their marital status listed as Engaged. I targeted even more tightly by choosing that they have a college degree and had a higher income bracket because I wanted to assure they could afford my services. I ran that ad for 45 days which cost me less than $1,500 and it brought in $32,000 in new clients. It worked great! I knew that the money I was spending on ads was being seen by the kind of person I was looking for. No waste!
So what are the drawbacks?
The only drawback is that the conversion will delete all of your posts. Anything that was posted to that personal Facebook profile will be deleted. The only thing that will copy over is the friends which will be converted into likes. I would recommend backing up the content of your Facebook profile first because you may have photos there that you don’t want to lose. Facebook does provide an option for backing up and downloading your data, but it’s pretty low quality. The images that you will get are not going to be the high-quality images you uploaded. Are there any alternatives?
If you are afraid of losing data, simply create a new business page and keep your existing profile. You can post to your profile to get people over to your new page. Consider a special offer or do a give-a-way to get people to like your new page. You can keep your personal profile or disable it. Disabling a personal profile does not delete it. You can reactivate it at any time.
